A popular trend that has been around for a while but is seen more and more everyday are Suicide Doors. This modification to your existing car doors makes them open in a reverse fashion due to the placement of the door hinge. You can find this modification completed on many different types of cars, from the old hot rods to new vehicles today. Any type of vehicle can have suicide doors, sedans, muscle cars, trucks, SUV's and more.
So where did Suicide Doors get there name from. Early on, several different makes and models of cars used suicide doors, only they weren't called that at that time. The doors opened on the opposite side. Basically the door hinge was placed on the door frame towards the rear of the car, instead of the front. After the car was parked near the curb and as drivers opened their door, the door would actually blind their view from the vehicle traffic coming towards them from the rear as the exited the car. The cars would crash into the now open door and the door would be smashed back at the person who was inside or exiting the car. This could result in a fatality by the person who had opened the door and other passengers in the vehicle. Hence the name Suicide Doors.
As time went on, the hinge was moved to the front of the vehicle. Now when you the driver exits the car, you view of the traffic is not blocked. If a car is close enough to hit the door, the person exiting the car is able to go back inside the vehicle as the door gets hit. The door would now be smashed towards the hood of the car in front by the fender. You are better able to survive. This is why we call the doors of today "doors" and not suicide doors.
- ยท These doors should always be professionally installed on a vehicle. Welding is required.
