Suicide Doors are popular with old hot rods, muscle cars, and low riders. Installation consist of a new hinge being placed on the opposite side of the door so that they open in the reverse fashion as they currently do. This modification is not difficult to do, but takes a lot of time, preparation, and thought to get it right during installation. Welding is required on the installation. The Installation Basics:
The Door Conversion involves removing the current hinges, replacing them with the new hinge which is relocated at the opposite side of the door. Once the proper placement is determined, the new hinges are welded onto the door and the vehicle.
But thats not the end, now that the door opens differently, a new door latch and striker plate are installed. This is what locks the door in place and keeps it closed. The GT Factory Door Kit includes this product. With the Autoloc kit, this product is not included but can be purchased separately from us. This is very important for an easy installation.
The next thing to consider is how should the vehicle un latch the doors when they are closed so that they can open. If you are going to use your current door handle on the exterior of the car, the linkage that connects the door handle to the latch will need to be re-routed. We sell an Extension for $13.50 that will help with this job. Another option is to have the doors pop open on their own with a shaved door kit and Door Popper. We can help recommend the best products and sizes for your specific installation situation. We carry Autoloc Bear Claw latches which range from $49.00 to $309.00 and are available in remote operation. The bear claw latches make installation a cinch. If installation involves using remote operation, the linkage extension kit will not be necessary. The exterior door handles can be removed for a "shaved" appearance.
